The Country Food Similarity Index groups the countries of Cambodia, East Timor, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam into the Southeast Asia food region. It is one of the 23 world food sub-regions identified by the Index.

Rice is by far the most common ingredient in Southeast Asian food. Lemongrass, cilantro, mint, basil, ginger, garlic, and chili peppers are frequently used to enhance the flavors of dishes. Given the proximity to the sea and rivers, fish and seafood are prominent ingredients in the cuisine. Grilled, steamed, or used in soups, these ingredients are often central to many dishes.

Why these ingredients are common in this region

Southeast Asia has a tropical climate that is conducive to the cultivation of rice. Rice paddies require warm temperatures and abundant water, both of which are prevalent in the region. The geography of Southeast Asia, with its vast lowland areas suitable for rice cultivation, makes it an ideal environment for growing this staple crop.

Many traditional dishes are centered around fish in Southeast Asia. The region is characterized by an extensive network of rivers, lakes, and other freshwater sources. This abundance of water bodies provides an ideal environment for the breeding and cultivation of freshwater fish. Tilapia, Catfish, and Carp are three of the most common.

The tropical climate of Southeast Asia is well-suited for the cultivation of bananas. These countries have warm temperatures and abundant rainfall. Therefore it has ideal conditions for banana plants to thrive. The affordability of bananas contributes to their popularity, especially since this region is not especially wealthy.

While there are certain dishes enjoyed throughout the country, Vietnam’s diverse regions also contribute to the richness of its cuisine, since they have variations in climate, agriculture, and local ingredients.
