Have you ever wondered how similar or different two countries are? The Country Similarity Index attempts to quantify how similar countries are to each other relative to other countries. The index is a statistically-based way to measure this. It weighs equally five major aspects of countries: their demographics, culture, politics, infrastructure, and geography. The methodology is exactly the same for each country. The research combines 1,000 different data points to arrive at the conclusions.
Mozambique is a Sub-Saharan African country. It is like many countries in the region. The five most similar countries to Mozambique all have tropical climates and their landscape consists mostly of savanna land. In addition, most of their people natively speak Niger-Congo languages and they all use the Latin alphabet. These countries also tend to have a lot of poverty and their infrastructure is not well developed.

- Angola is another former Portuguese colony in Southern Africa, so it also uses Portuguese as its lingua franca. Although Angola borders the Atlantic Ocean and Mozambique borders the Indian Ocean, the two countries have a similar climate as well. Both use a small percentage of their land to grow crops but most of their people are farmers and they primarily grow corn. Furthermore, the diets of both countries are heavy in cassava.
- Tanzania is just to the north of Mozambique, so its geography is extremely similar. Both countries have a tropical savanna climate and have similar flora and fauna. Both countries are mostly Christian but also a significant Muslim minority, although Tanzania has more Muslims. However, there are some notable differences in their laws. Tanzania allows polygamy and has greater restrictions on prostitution and abortion than Mozambique.

Angola is by far the most similar country to Mozambique. However, there are a few traits of Mozambique that Angola lacks, but Malawi has. Both Malawi and Mozambique are in East Africa and both border Lake Malawi. They also both drive on the left side of the road, unlike Angola. Furthermore, Malawi and Mozambique are more democratic than Angola. Unlike Angola, they give few entitlements to their citizens. There are also more Muslims in Malawi and Mozambique than Angola.
