Is UCLA or Kentucky the most successful college basketball program in the men’s NCAA tournament? A rubric was developed to determine which team has been the most historically successful. The points rubric awards progressively more points the further a team went in the NCAA tournament. The results suggest that UCLA and Kentucky both have good cases.

4 pts. – Reached Final Four
2 pts. – Reached Elite Eight
1 pts. – Reached Sweet 16

TOP 5 MOST SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS

1. Kentucky – 241 pts.

Kentucky has the highest all-time winning percentage in NCAA basketball. It also has the most appearances in the NCAA basketball tournament. The team has made the Final Four 17 times, the third most of any program. It also has 8 NCAA basketball titles, the second most behind on UCLA.

2. UCLA – 231 pts.

UCLA has won the most NCAA basketball titles, with 11. However, the vast majority of the program’s success came in the 1960’s and 1970’s under coach John Wooden. Their last title came in 1995. The team has also made the Final Four 4 times since the year 2000.

3. North Carolina – 204 pts.

North Carolina has historically been the best ACC team in the NCAA tournaments. The program has won 6 NCAA basketball titles, with the most recent coming in 2017. Furthermore, North Carolina has made the Final Four a record 21 times. The team has had relatively consistent success throughout the decades.

4. Duke – 165 pts.

Duke basketball is the second ACC program to make this list. The team has won 5 NCAA basketball titles and appeared in the championship game 11 times (the third most of any program). The late 1980’s – early 1990’s was the era where the program excelled the most.

5. Kansas – 163 pts.

The best Big XII basketball program at the NCAA tournament has been Kansas. The team has won the NCAA basketball title four times, in 1952, 1988, 2008, and most recently in 2022. Kansas has also made the Final Four 16 times. The program has had relatively consistent success throughout the years.

This only takes into account actual results and does take points away from teams for vacated wins.
