The Largest Minority in Each State

This map reflects the statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau from 2020. It reveals the two most common races / ethnicities of people in each state, in proportion to each other. The three most common categories in the United States are White, Black, and Latino. However, some states also have significant Asian and American Indian populations.

White

The vast majority of states in the country have a majority White population. Maine, Vermont, and West Virginia are among the states with the highest percentages of White people. In general, more northern states tend to have a higher percentage of White people than states that are further south. Hawaii has the lowest percentage, with only 21%.

Black

Since the Latino population tends to be higher in the Western half of the United States, the states where Blacks are the largest minority are confined to the Eastern states. Mississippi, Louisiana, and Georgia are among the states with the highest percentages of Black people. Montana has the lowest percentage, with less than 1%.

Latino

The Latino population tends to be largest minority in the Western half of the United States, however Florida and the metropolitan areas of New York and Chicago also have many. New Mexico is the only state with a majority Latino population, however states that border Mexico also have a high percentage. West Virginia has the lowest percentage of Latinos, with around 2%.

American Indian

Only around 1% of the population in the United States lists their race as American Indian. However, there are few few rural states where they are the largest minority. Around 15% of the people in Alaska are Native Americans, the largest percentage in the country. Although not highlighted on the map, Oklahoma and New Mexico also have a relatively high percentage, but not higher than the percentage of Whites and Latinos in these states.

Asian

Hawaii has by far the highest percentage of Asians in the country, with over 35%, a higher percentage than even the White population in the state. Most Asians have Filipino or Japanese ancestry in these states. California and Washington also have a relatively high percentage of Asians.
