The Country Food Similarity Index groups the countries of Kiribati, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu into the South Pacific food region. Despite being located in Indian Ocean, the nations of Comoros and Seychelles also have many attributes in common with this region. It is one of the 23 world food sub-regions identified by the Index.

Proximity to the ocean ensures that seafood, including fish and shellfish, is a staple in this region’s meals. The coconut adds a distinctive flavor to many dishes. Tropical fruits like bananas and pineapples contribute to the vibrancy of the region’s cuisine. Rice, wheat, and taro are the three most common starches on these islands. Many islands in the South Pacific were colonized by European powers, and the introduction of European crops into their diet, including wheat, is part of their colonial legacy.

Why these ingredients are common in this region
