Which Countries are Most Similar to Switzerland? 2.0

Have you ever wondered how similar or different two countries are? The Country Similarity Index attempts to quantify how similar countries are to each other relative to other countries. The index is a statistically-based way to measure this. It weighs equally five major aspects of countries: their demographics, culture, politics, infrastructure, and geography. The methodology is exactly the same for each country. The research combines 1,000 different data points to arrive at the conclusions.

Similar to other Western European countries

Switzerland has a mix of Protestants and Catholics, as well as German, French, and Italian speakers. Thus, it is somewhat similar to many West European countries. The top five most similar countries all have either German or French as one of their official languages. However, Switzerland is also extreme in some ways, since it is one of the richest countries in the world. It has a colder climate than most European countries as well due to its mountainous terrain and high elevation.

Please note that Liechtenstein is not listed, since Liechtenstein was too small for the Country Similarity Index to rank. Otherwise, it would most likely be the most similar to Switzerland.

Four of the five least similar countries are located in Africa, and four of the five least similar countries also have Muslim majority populations. They all have a far lower standard of living and they are not nearly as democratic.
