The Country – US State Comparisons are designed to quantify just that — measuring how similar each U.S. state is to different countries around the world relative to the United States. This index provides a data-driven way to make those comparisons. It equally weights five major factors: demographics, culture, politics, technology, and geography. Over 1,000 different data points are used to generate the results.
Top 10 Countries More Similar to Georgia than the US
Georgia has a hotter climate than most areas of the United States. Furthermore, it has a much higher percentage of people with African ancestry than overall US population. The five countries with many more traits in common with Georgia than the United States overall tend to have people with predominately African ancestry.
- Central African Republic and Georgia share a hot, humid climate.Both have strong agricultural traditions. Corn, cotton, and peanuts are major crops grown in both of their farmlands. However, the Central African Republic has much lower income levels and far less developed infrastructure.
- Bahamas is one of the closest countries to Georgia, since it is located off the coast of Florida. Both were once colonized by the British, who brought many Africans to these lands. Furthermore, a high percentage of their people are Protestant Christians. They also have a similar average age of marriage.
- Guyana is located in South America, but it has some parallels with Georgia. They both have a history of being British colonial plantations where Africans were enslaved. However, one big difference is that Guyana has a much bigger population from South Asia than Georgia.
- Liberia was founded in the 19th century by formerly enslaved African Americans, many from the U.S. South. Both Georgia and Liberia are mostly Protestant Christian, however Liberia has a higher percentage of Muslims. Another similarity is that they have about the same population density.

Most are located at a higher latitude and therefore have a colder climate. Furthermore, these countries are a lot less conservative politically than Georgia.
- Canada is located to the north of the United States and has a much colder climate than Georgia. It is also much less densely populated. In addition, Canadians tend to be more liberal than people in Georgia.
- Australia has a much drier climate than Georgia. Australia provides public healthcare and a broader welfare state, while Georgia relies more on market forces and charity, leading to worse health outcomes.
- New Zealand is one of the most progressive, secular, egalitarian countries in the world, while Georgia is more conservative and religious. In addition, it has few people with African ancestry, since most of its citizens have roots in Europe or native Maori ancestry.
- Argentina is in South America. Since Georgia has relatively few Latinos, a low percentage of its people speak Spanish, compared to the rest of the United States. Argentina’s climate tends to be colder and drier than the climate in Georgia as well.
