The data shows that Nevada generally votes for the eventual winner of the election. Only two of the five states with similar voting records are also located in the West region. In fact, two are located in the Northeast region. All five of the states with the least similar presidential preferences are located in the South region.
5 States with similar presidential preferences to Nevada
- New Mexico and Nevada have voted almost identically in presidential elections. The only election that they did not vote for the same candidate was in 2000, when Al Gore won New Mexico, but George W. Bush won Nevada. Even then, Gore only won New Mexico by less than 0.1% of the vote. Both states have a relatively high number of Latinos.
- New Hampshire is on the other side of the country, but it has also voted in presidential elections similarly to Nevada. The two states preferred the same candidates in all but one election since 1964. The exception was that in 2004 John Kerry won New Hampshire, but Nevada voted in favor of George W. Bush.
- Colorado is another landlocked state in the West region, where many of its people live in one urban area. The two states preferred the same candidates in all but one election since 1964. The exception was that in 1996 Bob Dole won Colorado, but Nevada voted in favor of Bill Clinton.
- New Jersey is another state on the Atlantic Coast on this list. Since 1960, Nevada and New Jersey have voted for the same presidential candidates with one exception: George W. Bush won Nevada in 2000 and 2004, while Democrats won in New Jersey during that timeframe.
- Illinois and New Jersey voted for the same presidential candidates in every election since 1960. Therefore, like New Jersey, Nevada and Illinois have voted for the same presidential candidates with one exception: George W. Bush won Nevada in 2000 and 2004. His campaign resonated with voters on issues such as national security and social values.
