Three of the five states with the most similar presidential preferences to Maine are in the Northeast region. In the last two decades, Maine has voted for Democratic candidates in all presidential elections. The four states with the least similar presidential voting preferences are all located in the South. This is because they used to vote for Democrats but now prefer Republicans. In contrast, Maine is used to vote for Republicans more often but now prefers Democrats.

- Connecticut is another state in New England. Since 1964, these states have voted for the same presidential tickets in every contest. However, in 1960, Maine preferred Richard Nixon, while Connecticut voted for John F. Kennedy. In recent years, Maine has tended to vote for Democrats at a lower percentage than Connecticut.
- Vermont is extremely similar to Maine in presidential elections as well. It is another rural state in New England. Since 1916, these states have voted for all the same presidential candidates, with the exception of 1968. In that election Vermont voted for Richard Nixon, but Maine voted for Hubert Humphrey.
- Washington is on the opposite side of the country, but it still has extremely similar political preferences to Maine. Interestingly enough, since 1952, Maine and Washington have preferred the same presidential candidates in every election, with the exception of the 1988 contest. That year Washington voted for Michael Dukakis while Maine voted for George H.W. Bush.
- New Jersey, like Maine, is another state in the Northeast region. Since 1972, the states have voted for the same ticket in every election. However they voted for different candidates in 1960 and 1968. New Jersey president Democrats, while Maine preferred Republicans in those elections.
- California is on the opposite side of the country, but it has voted for the same candidates in presidential elections as Maine since 1960, with the exception of 1968. In that year, Maine voted for the Democrat Hubert Humphrey, while Richard Nixon won his home state of California.
