Ohio has a particularly unique history in its preference for presidential candidates. No states have particularly similar voting records to Ohio. However, it often votes for the eventual winner of the presidential election. Of the five states with the most similar voting records in presidential elections, three are in the Southern region.

  1. Florida and Ohio have voted for the same presidential candidates in every election since 1960, with the exception of the 1992 election. Ohio ended up voting for Bill Clinton, while Florida voted for George H. W. Bush. However, in 1996 both states voted to reelect Clinton. Both states have relatively similar demographics to the overall country.
  2. Kentucky borders Ohio, so it is not a surprise these states have voted similarly in elections. Since 1960, these states have voted for the same candidates in every election, with the exception of Obama’s campaigns in 2008 and 2012. Both states voted for Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan twice.
  3. Iowa is another Midwestern state. However, since 1960, Iowa has voted for Democrats more often in presidential elections than Ohio. Al Gore won Iowa in 2000 and Michael Dukakis won Iowa in 1988. During the same elections, Ohio voted for the Republican candidate instead.
  4. Tennessee is very similar to Kentucky. In fact, Kentucky and Tennessee have voted for the same presidential candidates in every election since 1960. However, Ohio and Kentucky tend to be more moderate politically than Tennessee, so it is lower on this list.
  5. New Hampshire and Ohio had been considered swing states for many years. However, Ohio has started to vote for Republican candidates more often, while New Hampshire has started to vote for Democratic candidates more often. In contrast to Ohio, New Hampshire has never voted for Donald Trump.
