Missouri has often favored the Republican Party in presidential elections recently. However, it also voted for Bill Clinton twice. Of the five states with the most similar voting records in presidential elections, four are located in the Southeast region.
5 States with similar presidential preferences to Missouri
- Arkansas is located to the south of Missouri so it is not a surprise it is on this list. These states have voted for the same presidential tickets in every election since 1956, with the exception of 1968. In that year Arkansas voted for George Wallace, while Missouri voted for Nixon.
- Kentucky also borders Missouri, albeit with a much shorter border on the Mississippi River. Kentucky and Missouri have voted for the same presidential candidates in every presidential election since 1972. Both states voted for Bill Clinton twice and Donald Trump three times.
- Tennessee borders both Kentucky and Missouri. Since 1964, the two states have preferred the same presidential ticket in every election. However in 1960 and 1956 these states voted differently. Missouri voted for the Democrat in those elections, unlike Tennessee.
- Louisiana is located just to the south of Arkansas. Since 1972, Missouri and Louisiana have voted for the same candidates in presidential elections. However, in 1964 and 1968, they voted differently.
- Ohio is another state in the Midwest. Unlike Missouri, it is known as a moderate swing state, but it still has voted similarly to Missouri in presidential elections. In fact, since 1964, these states voted for the same candidates, with the exception of 2008 and 2012, when Obama was elected.
