Most Appearances in Men’s Basketball at the Olympics

Men’s basketball has been an official Olympic medal sport since the 1936 Games in Berlin, and over the decades a relatively small group of nations has established remarkable consistency at the world’s biggest sporting event. While dozens of countries have appeared in the Olympic tournament, only a handful have qualified ten or more times.

The United States has by far the most appearances, which makes sense because basketball originated in there. Behind it are Australia and Brazil, followed by Spain and Italy. Olympic basketball qualification has historically been heavily influenced by continental competition. Brazil and Australia benefited from being basketball powers in regions with relatively few countries capable of consistently challenging them.

United States

21 appearances

No country comes close to the United States in Olympic men’s basketball participation. It has won 17 gold medals, along with one silver and two bronze medals. The only Olympic games they did not participate in was 1980 in Moscow, since the entire United States team boycotted. The last time they did not win the gold medal was in 2004 in Athens, where they lost to Argentina.

Australia

16 appearances

Australia did not participate in the first five official Olympic tournaments. The team first appeared in 1956, when Melbourne hosted the Olympics. They have subsequently become one of the most consistent teams in international basketball, qualifying for every Olympics from 1972 onward. However, they have only won one Olympic medal, a bronze in the 2020 Tokyo games.

Brazil

16 appearances

Brazil appeared at basketball first appearance in the 1936 Berlin games. The team won three bronze medals, in 1948, 1960 and 1964, and has produced some of Olympic basketball’s most recognizable players, most notably Oscar Schmidt, the tournament’s all-time leading scorer until 2024. The last time Brazil was not part of the Olympics was in the 2020 Tokyo games.

Spain

14 appearances

The Spanish national team did not qualify for the first several tournaments but emerged as a major Olympic power. Spain has won three silver medals and one bronze, making it one of the most successful nations never to win Olympic gold. Spain’s remarkable consistency has been closely associated with the country’s golden generation, including Pau and Marc Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro and Ricky Rubio.

Italy

13 appearances

The Italians’ Olympic history stretches back to 1936. Italy’s best results came in the 1980s and 2000s, when it won silver medals in 1980 and 2004. However after 2004, Italy has only participated in one Olympic games, where they finished in 5th place. Italy’s all-time leading scorer is shooting guard Antonello Riva, but he never played in the NBA.

Serbia / Yugoslavia

13 appearances

Yugoslavia has 1 gold, 3 silvers and 1 bronze in Olympic men’s basketball. After Yugoslavia broke apart, Serbia continued its great basketball tradition through its successor national teams. The team won silver in 1996 and 2016, as well as a bronze in 2024. However, Serbia did not even qualify for the Olympic games in 2008, 2012, and 2020. Nikola Jokić, a 3 time NBA MVP, is Serbian.

Russia / Soviet Union

13 appearances

The Soviet Union won 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals in Olympic men’s basketball, making it the second-most successful program in Olympic history behind the United States. The Soviet Union won medals at all nine Olympics it entered from 1952 to 1988. After the Soviet Union broke apart, Russia has made only three Olympic appearances as an independent nation and has not qualified since 2012.

France

11 appearances

France has 4 silver medals in Olympic men’s basketball, but no gold medals. The French reached the Olympic final in 1948, 2000, 2020 and 2024, losing to the United States on each occasion. France has made Olympic appearances in four consecutive Games from 2012 through 2024. However, France had a long Olympic absences as well. The future looks bright with Victor Wembanyama on their team.

Canada

10 appearances

Canada has 1 silver medal in Olympic men’s basketball, finishing second at the inaugural tournament in 1936. However, it has not won a medal since 1936. Its fourth-place finishes in 1976 and 1984 represent its next-best results. It is notable that James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, was Canadian. The team had a long Olympic drought from 2004 to 2020, but was 5th place in 2024.

Puerto Rico

10 appearances

Puerto Rico has never won an Olympic medal. Its best result came at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where it finished fourth. Puerto Rico was a regular Olympic participant from 1960 through 1976, returned in 1988, and then appeared at four of the next five Games through 2004. After a 20-year absence, Puerto Rico returned at Paris 2024, finishing 12th. Many people of Puerto Rican descent have played in the NBA.
