Baseball has been an official Olympic medal sport since the 1992 Games in Barcelona, The sport has appeared at only seven Summer Olympics. A small group of nations has established remarkable consistency. Six countries have appeared in the Olympic baseball tournament at least four times.
Japan is the only nation that has qualified for all six Olympic baseball tournaments held since 1992. The limited number of Olympic tournaments has made each qualification particularly significant, especially because baseball was removed from the Olympic program in 2012 and 2016 before returning in 2020.
Japan

Japan has one of the world’s strongest baseball cultures. The Japanese team finished third in Barcelona in 1992, second in Atlanta in 1996, third again in Athens in 2004, fourth in Beijing in 2008 and finally won its first Olympic gold medal on home soil at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The victory gave Japan its fourth Olympic baseball medal overall, although no MLB players took part in the competition.
Cuba

Cuba has been one of the most successful teams in Olympic baseball history. Cuba competed in the first five official Olympic baseball tournaments from 1992 through 2008, winning gold medals in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, and Athens in 2004. It also won silver medals in Sydney in 2000 and Beijing in 2008. However, Cuba did not qualify for the Tokyo 2020 tournament.
United States

Baseball originated in the United States, so it is no surprise it is on this list. The country has appeared in five of the six Olympic baseball tournaments. However, they failed to qualify for the Athens 2004 Olympics, despite being the defending champions in Sydney 2000 Olympics. The United States has also won one silver and two bronze medals as well.
South Korea

South Korea is another talented East Asian team on this list. The nation has appeared in four Olympic baseball tournaments. Its first came at Atlanta 1996, where it finished eighth. It then won bronze at Sydney 2000, but failed to qualify for Athens 2004. South Korea went undefeated in Beijing 2008, winning all nine of its games and defeating Cuba 3–2 in the gold-medal game.
Netherlands

The Netherlands made four consecutive Olympic appearances from Atlanta 1996 through Beijing 2008. The Dutch finished fifth in both 1996 and 2000, but never won a medal. The Netherlands has also been one of Europe’s strongest baseball nations outside the Olympics. The Kingdom of Netherlands includes Curaçao and Aruba, and baseball is enormously popular on those islands.
Italy

Italy appeared in the first four official Olympic baseball tournaments, from Barcelona 1992 through Athens 2004. However, its best result was only sixth in Atlanta 1996. Italy has historically been able to select players with Italian ancestry who were born and developed in the United States. A player doesn’t necessarily need to have grown up playing baseball in Italy to potentially represent Italy.
