The Country Food Similarity Index is a statistically-based attempt to quantify how similar the food in one country is relative to another. By comparing the weight of raw food ingredients used in each country, a score is assigned that reflects the degree of similarity between the respective countries. The methodology is exactly the same for each country studied. 

The Most Similar Diets to Samoan Food

Samoa shares many culinary similarities with the other countries that are located on isolated tropical islands close to the equator. As a result, two major components of their diets are fish and coconuts. This is because the vast majority of people in these countries live relatively close to the ocean. They also import food from overseas.

  1. Vanuatu and Samoa are both located in the South Pacific Ocean. They share a mutual appreciation for coconut, seafood, and earth oven cooking. The Least Similar Diets to Samoan Food

With the exception of Syria, the countries with the least similar food to Samoa are landlocked. In addition, these five countries also have much drier climates than Samoa, so their agriculture is far different. Four of the five countries are predominately Muslim.

  4. Syria has a much more arid climate than Samoa, so their farms produce drastically different crops. Syrians tend to eat a lot of oranges, lemons, watermelons, and apples, while people in Samoa tend to eat more tropical fruits like bananas and coconuts.
