Although three of the five state with the most similar presidential preferences to New Hampshire are in the Northeast region, the most similar is actually Colorado. In the last two decades, New Hampshire has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate after 2000’s election. The five states with the least similar presidential voting preferences are all located in the South. This is because they used to vote for Democrats but now prefer Republicans. New Hampshire is the opposite.
5 States with similar presidential preferences to New Hampshire
- Colorado is not on the East coast, but the states have had similar presidential preferences. Colorado and New Hampshire were once considered swing states, but now tend to vote for Democratic candidates for president. The two states have disagreed in just two elections since 1960. New Hampshire voted for Democrats in 1996 and 2004, unlike Colorado.
- New Jersey and New Hampshire have voted for the same presidential ticket in every election since 1964, with the exception of 2000. That year, New Jersey preferred Al Gore, while New Hampshire preferred George W. Bush.
- Maine borders New Hampshire. Since 1948, these states have only voted differently in presidential elections twice. The last time was in the year 2000, when Maine preferred Al Gore, while New Hampshire preferred George W. Bush. They also didn’t vote alike in 1968. Unlike Maine, New Hampshire voted three times for Richard Nixon.
- Vermont is another state in New England, although it has vastly different demographics from other states on this list. Vermont and New Jersey have voted for the same presidential candidate in every election since 1964. However, in 1960, Vermont preferred Richard Nixon, while New Jersey preferred John F. Kennedy.
- California is on the opposite side of the country, but it has voted for the same candidates in presidential elections as New Jersey since 1952, with the exception of 1960. In that election, Richard Nixon, who represented California, won the state, while John F. Kennedy won New Jersey. Since Bill Clinton won in 1992, Democrats have won these states in every election.
